Agartala: In a shocking incident, a schoolteacher allegedly killed his wife and 19-year-old son before attempting suicide at his residence in the Matabari Beltali area of Udaipur subdivision in Tripura’s Gomati district on Sunday night.

The accused has been identified as Ajit Das. According to preliminary police findings, he had been undergoing treatment for a mental health condition.

Police said Das allegedly poisoned himself after attacking his family members.

“We received information around 5:00 am about a double murder. When our team reached the spot, we found that Diganta Das and his mother, Rupa Das, had been killed. The prime accused, Ajit Das—husband of the deceased and father of the victim—had consumed pesticides. He has been shifted to a hospital for treatment,” said SDPO Udaipur Debanjali Roy.

Investigators said the motive behind the killings is yet to be established.

“Initial findings suggest the accused was not mentally stable. However, the exact motive can only be confirmed after recording his statement. He is currently undergoing treatment after consuming pesticides,” Roy added.

Police also recovered a suspected murder weapon from the scene.

“A blood-stained wooden pole has been seized, which is believed to have been used in the crime. The injuries indicate the victims were bludgeoned to death,” the officer said.

Authorities have ruled out the possibility of a family dispute, as neighbours and relatives did not indicate any such conflict.

Family sources said Diganta Das was a law student at a private college in Agartala, while his mother, Rupa Das, was a homemaker.
