Imphal: A cadre of the proscribed Peopleโ€™s Liberation Army (PLA) escaped from police custody in Manipur on Monday, leading to the suspension of a police officer and a constable.

The escaped insurgent has been identified as Nepram Lemba Meitei alias Tomba (24), who fled from the custody of Heingang Police Station in Imphal East district after being taken out of the lock-up to urinate, police said.

According to reports, he managed to escape when police personnel escorting him outside the lock-up allowed him out briefly.

Nepram Lemba Meitei, son of N. Deva and a resident of Nongada Shantipur Makha Leikai in Imphal East, was arrested by security forces on March 31 from the Khabeisoi area under Heingang Police Station.

Following the escape, Investigating Officer Sub-Inspector Md Akbar Shah and Constable W Juresh Singh were suspended for alleged negligence in duty.

A search operation has been launched to trace and recapture him.

Police have also registered a fresh FIR against the escapee under the Arms Act, while a high-level inquiry has been ordered to examine the security lapse at the police station.

As of filing this report, the insurgent has not been rearrested.
