Dimapur: A mandatory 48-hour silence period will come into force in the 28-Koridang Assembly constituency under Mokokchung district from 4 pm on April 7, following the conclusion of campaigning for the by-election.
In an order, Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Ajit Kumar Verma said all forms of public campaigning would be prohibited during the final 48 hours leading up to polling. The restrictions are aimed at ensuring a free and fair electoral process.
The order bars public meetings, rallies and processions after the deadline, and prohibits the display or dissemination of election-related content through electronic media, including television and similar devices.
It also disallows any campaign-related activity through entertainment, such as musical programmes or theatrical performances, intended to influence voters.
The district administration has directed all political functionaries, party workers and individuals brought in from outside who are not registered voters in the constituency to leave the area immediately after campaigning ends. It noted that the continued presence of non-electors could impact the integrity of the electoral process.
Violations of the order may attract penalties, including imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both.
The district magistrate has instructed the returning officer, assistant returning officers, magistrates, police and security personnel to strictly enforce the restrictions and ensure compliance with the guidelines.
