Aizawl: The women’s wing of the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) in Mizoram on Thursday lodged a police complaint against a social media user for allegedly circulating a defamatory post targeting Baryl Vanneihsangi, a ZPM legislator from Aizawl South-III constituency, a party leader said.
The complaint came amid heightened political campaigning for the upcoming elections to the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), slated for April 21.
The First Information Report (FIR) was filed at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Aizawl against an individual who used the name Rfa Rfralte on Facebook, the leader said.
She said that the user posted two pictures of Vanneihsangi in a Facebook group called โZoram Politics and Newsโ with a caption intended to malign the MLAโs reputation on Wednesday.
According to the leader, the ZPM Zonu has taken the matter very seriously, viewing the post as an attack on a woman’s dignity.
She alleged that the post was a total fabrication intended to tarnish the reputation of the legislator.
She said that the ZPM Zonu approached the Cyber Crime Police Station and filed the FIR to ensure that the perpetrator is booked and given appropriate legal punishment for spreading lies.
At 32, Vanneihsangi was the youngest MLA when she was elected to the state legislature in 2023, defeating incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF) MLA Lalnunmawia from Aizawl South-III.
The TV presenter and radio jockey-turned-politician rose to prominence when she successfully contested the AMC polls in 2021 on a ZPM ticket.
