The arrests follow violence that broke out in the Tuibong area around 6.30 p.m. on March 25 after a road accident involving a security forces vehicle.

Imphal: Security forces have arrested five individuals in connection with the attack, vandalism and burning of a Tata Winger vehicle used by security personnel at Tuibong Bazar in Manipurโ€™s Churachandpur district, officials said on Friday.

The arrests follow violence that broke out in the Tuibong area around 6.30 p.m. on March 25 after a road accident involving a security forces vehicle. Eyewitnesses alleged that the vehicle did not stop after the collision, triggering anger among local residents.

Officials, however, said the Mine Protected Vehicle (Casspir) was moving in accordance with traffic norms when it was struck by a two-wheeler. The rider and pillion were allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Soon after the accident, a group of locals staged protests in the area, which escalated into violence. According to officials, some elements attempted to incite unrest, leading to damage to vehicles of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), vandalism of public property and disruption of normal life.

During the confrontation, several security personnel sustained serious injuries, while vehicles used by the forces were damaged.

As part of the initial action, five persons were arrested namely Lunmalsawm Sehlep (28) of Kharam Vaiphei, Haominlien Kipgen (28) of Tuibong, Khaigoulien Haokip (30) of Hengjol, Hemtinlen Haokio (23) of Koite, and Khupgoulen Khongsai (28) of NS Khojangphai, all from Churachandpur district.

In addition, 27 more persons were detained and bound under relevant legal provisions for their involvement in related disturbances.

Further investigation is underway, officials added.
