Dimapur: The Nagaland government has declared April 9, the day of polling for the byelection to the Koridang Assembly constituency in Mokokchung district, as a paid holiday for electors in the constituency who are employed in government offices, banks, financial institutions, private business establishments, industrial undertakings, or any other establishments, including daily wage and casual workers, to enable them to exercise their franchise.
In a notification issued on Wednesday, the provision also includes electors in the constituency who may be working on a shift basis in any establishment or shop.
Further, it applies to persons who are ordinarily residents of the constituency and registered as electors but may be serving or employed in industrial undertakings or establishments located outside the constituency.
In such cases, even those electors, including casual workers working outside the said constituency, would be entitled to the benefit of a paid holiday, the notification said.
These provisions, however, will not apply to any elector whose absence may cause danger or substantial loss to the establishment in which he or she is engaged.
Meanwhile, the state Governor has also declared March 28 as a working day for state government offices located in Kohima in view of the financial year closing.
The day has also been declared a working day for banks and financial institutions under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, according to a government notification issued on Wednesday.
The government has directed all administrative heads and heads of departments to ensure the attendance of officers and staff of their respective departments on that day.
