Agartala: Opposition members from the Congress and CPI(M) on Monday staged a walkout in the Tripura Assembly to protest the introduction of a Bill for setting up a private university.

The Bill, which seeks to establish Dhanvantari Skill University, was tabled after the lunch break during the ongoing Budget session.

Opposition legislators objected to the move, stating that it was the fourth such Bill introduced in the session. Three similar Bills had been passed on March 20 despite their opposition, following which they had staged a walkout that day as well.

Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury said the party opposed the Bill on the grounds that institutions with questionable track records should not be allowed to operate in the state.

He alleged that some entities entering the education sector had faced allegations elsewhere, raising concerns about their credibility.

A Congress legislator said the government should encourage local educationists to establish higher educational institutions if it intends to promote growth in the sector.

He also expressed concern over the quality of some private institutions, stating that degrees offered by certain colleges did not carry adequate value in the job market.

Despite the oppositionโ€™s protest, the House proceeded with its legislative business.
