Imphal: Heavy rain, hailstorms and gusty winds battered several parts of Manipur in the early hours of Sunday, uprooting trees and damaging electricity poles, which led to power outages in multiple areas.
In southern Thanga village near Loktak Lake, five houses were blown away by high-velocity winds at around 2 a.m. on Sunday. Another six houses were damaged in Moirang, also located near the lake.
A resident of Moirang, Kwairakpam Thoibas, whose house was damaged in the storm, appealed to authorities to provide relief materials to help affected families rebuild their homes.
In northern Senapati district, a severe hailstorm caused extensive damage to several houses in Rikhumai Taphou. Among those affected were residents identified as H. Lounie, Lounie, Kholi Poumai, Louni Theba, H. Kene, Thekharu, C.D. Hrani, Rebecca, P.H. Thekho, Daha, and S. Ruth.
The chairman of Rikhumai Taphou village has appealed to the authorities to provide compensation and assistance to the affected families.
Responding to the situation, the Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, said the government had directed officials to take immediate steps to mitigate the impact of the severe weather.
โIn view of the heavy rains and hailstorms affecting several parts of the state, strict directions have been issued to the concerned officials to take immediate measures to reduce the impact on affected families and communities,โ the Chief Minister said in a post on X.
He added that relief teams had been mobilised to ensure timely assistance and access to essential supplies, and that the government would continue to closely monitor the situation.
