Guwahati: The district administration in Meghalayaโs West Garo Hills has ordered the immediate shutdown of brick kilns operating without official approval, raising concerns about worsening air pollution and the health of workers and nearby residents.
The directive was issued on Saturday, March 14 by District Magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal after instructions from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which requires brick kilns to obtain environmental clearance in order to ensure that air quality standards are maintained.
According to the district authorities, a number of brick-making units were found functioning in the area without the required permissions.
Officials said these units not only expose labourers to unsafe conditions but also add significantly to pollution in the surrounding region.
The administration warned that if such operations continue unchecked, the air quality in the district could deteriorate further, putting both workers and people living nearby at risk of health problems.
Using powers granted under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, the administration has ordered the immediate suspension of all brick kilns running without valid authorisation throughout the district.
Authorities added that the instruction was issued urgently and without prior hearing due to the seriousness of the matter, and it has taken effect right away.
