Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested an Assistant Manager and Loan Officer of the State Bank of India (SBI) posted at the Gumi Branch in Assamโs Kamrup (Rural) district on Friday for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 16,000 from a complainant for processing loan applications related to rooftop solar electrification.
According to an official statement issued by the CBI, the case was registered on March 12, 2026, following a complaint alleging that the accused bank official had demanded an undue advantage of Rs 16,000 to facilitate the processing of loan applications of customers seeking financial assistance for installing rooftop solar systems.
Acting on the complaint, the agency conducted a carefully planned trap operation. Investigators caught the accused red-handed while allegedly demanding and accepting the bribe from the complainant.
Officials confirmed that the trap was executed successfully, leading to the immediate arrest of the bank officer.
Sources within the investigating agency said that searches were also conducted at premises linked to the accused following the arrest.
The operation is part of the CBIโs ongoing efforts to curb corruption in public sector institutions and ensure transparency in financial services linked to government-supported schemes.
The arrested official has been produced before the Court of the Special Judge, CBI, in Guwahati for further legal proceedings.
Investigators are currently examining documents and other evidence related to the case to determine whether additional individuals may have been involved in the alleged bribery network.
Officials added that the investigation remains ongoing, and further developments are expected as the probe progresses.
