Aizawl traffic congestion

Aizawl: Mizoram’s lone Rajya Sabha member, K. Vanlalvena, on Tuesday called upon the Centre to construct flyover bridges in Aizawl to address persistent traffic congestion in the state capital, an official statement said.

Speaking on the floor of the House during the ongoing Parliament budget session, the MP stressed that Aizawl’s unique hilly terrain poses significant challenges to road expansion, the statement added.

He noted that the existing narrow road network is no longer sufficient to handle the volume of vehicles, leading to gridlocks that paralyze the state capital.

Vanlalvena highlighted the far-reaching consequences of these traffic delays, stating that the daily commute has become a major hurdle for the workforce and the education sector. Government officials, teachers, and students are frequently unable to reach their destinations on time, he said.

Beyond the personal inconvenience to citizens, he argued that the congestion acts as a bottleneck for Mizoram’s broader economic and developmental goals.

Drawing a comparison with urban development across the country, the Mizoram MP pointed out that the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has successfully implemented flyover projects in numerous major Indian cities.

Making a strong case for “equitable support,” he said that if the Ministry can provide such infrastructure to wealthier states, it is imperative that they extend the same assistance to a financially constrained state like Mizoram.

Vanlalvena expressed hope that the Centre would prioritize a flyover project for Aizawl to bring it on par with other developing urban centres in the country.
