Guwahati: In a significant political development, Bhupen Borah, the former president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
The induction took place at the Assam BJP headquarters, Vajpayee Bhawan, in the presence of the partyโs state president, Dilip Saikia.
Alongside Borah, former Congress worker Sanju Bora also became a member of the BJP.
Borah had resigned from the Congress on February 16, prompting urgent interventions from senior party leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, who personally spoke to him. Initially, he requested additional time to reconsider his decision.
However, the following day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Borahโs residence and announced that he would formally join the BJP on February 22.
The move comes ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, with the 126-seat house set to go to polls in March-April 2026.
