Guwahati: The situation in the Ruksin area of East Siang district has been reported as peaceful, with both the local administration and protesting residents maintaining calm amid the ongoing dispute over the silicon factory at the Industrial Growth Centre in Niglok.

Acting on a Gauhati High Court order, the East Siang district administration on Sunday attempted to move stranded trucks carrying materials to the silicon factory. However, the effort was thwarted by large-scale protests from local villagers. The material-laden trucks, which were eventually pushed back following strong public opposition, remain stranded at the Ruksin headquarters.

Tensions briefly escalated at the Ngorlung stretch of the MMJ (Miremโ€“Mikongโ€“Jonai) road, where a confrontation occurred between police and protesters. In the aftermath, the administration withdrew the trucks and lifted the security deployment from the area.

District administration officials stated that no further negotiations would be held with the protesting villagers on the matter.

โ€œOur officials are currently engaged in preparations for the Statehood Day celebrations scheduled for February 20. After the event, we will formulate a strategy to ensure the uninterrupted movement of materials and machinery to the silicon factory, in compliance with the High Courtโ€™s directive,โ€ said Ruksin ADC Kiran Ningo on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the local administration cleared roadblocks along the Ngorlung stretch of the MMJ road on Tuesday morning, deploying personnel and machinery from the PWD, and reopened the route for commuters.

Despite these developments, the protesting villagers remain firm in their opposition to the silicon factory and continue to resist its operation.
