The initiative aimed to sensitise students and faculty to the importance of protecting vultures.

Guwahati: Aaranyak, in collaboration with the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), organised an awareness programme on vulture conservation at Sibsagar Commerce College, highlighting the vital ecological and public health roles of these scavengers.

The initiative aimed to sensitise students and faculty to the importance of protecting vultures, often called natureโ€™s sanitation workers, and to stress the urgent need for their conservation.

Aaranyakโ€™s conservation official explained how vultures help prevent the spread of harmful bacteria by efficiently disposing of animal carcasses. The talk highlighted the broader ecological services provided by vultures in maintaining environmental and public health.

An environment enthusiast from Aaranyak detailed various vulture species, including those found in Sibsagar district, and discussed the challenges threatening their populations. He also emphasised the role of community support in conservation efforts.

A representative from BNHS addressed incidents of accidental poisoning and their devastating impact on vulture populations, while outlining ongoing initiatives to safeguard vultures and their habitats in the district.

The principal of Sibsagar Commerce College interacted with students, stressing the need for collective efforts in vulture conservation and broader environmental protection. The IQAC coordinator highlighted the importance of environmental awareness among youth.

The programme concluded with students taking a pledge to support vulture conservation and biodiversity initiatives, reflecting a growing interest in wildlife preservation. The session was anchored by an assistant professor of the college and saw enthusiastic participation from both students and faculty.
