ISIS-K poster Meghalaya
The notice was discovered Wednesday morning near Tura Law College at Araimile.

Shillong: Authorities in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills have initiated a detailed investigation after a poster threatening the indigenous Garo community surfaced in Tura, allegedly linked to the global terror group ISIS-K.

Officials described the poster as a potential attempt to stir communal tension.

The notice was discovered Wednesday morning near Tura Law College at Araimile, coming amid heightened local sensitivities following the January 9 killing of ACHIK activist Dilseng Sangma in Goalgaon.

While security experts suggest the “ISIS-K” label could be misleading, the timing has prompted authorities to remain on high alert.

West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma confirmed a suo motu case has been registered. “Initial assessments indicate this may be a deliberate effort by certain individuals or groups to create panic and disturb public order,” he said. The poster has been sent for forensic analysis.

Police emphasized that the incident appears isolated, noting that no similar threats have been reported elsewhere in the district. “We are taking all measures to trace those responsible and stop the spread of this content,” Sangma added.

In Shillong, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong called the incident “serious” and confirmed that the state is prepared to involve central agencies if necessary. Tura MP Saleng Sangma urged careful handling of the situation and stronger surveillance in sensitive areas. Cabinet Minister and Williamnagar MLA Marcuise N.

Marcuise N. Marak condemned the threats, urging residents to stay calm and united, and affirmed that Meghalaya stands for peace and harmony, adding that efforts to spread fear or division will not be tolerated.
