Imphal: A joint security team comprising central and state police intensified anti-insurgency operations, seizing arms, ammunition, and explosives along the Manipur–Assam border on the eve of the 77th Republic Day celebrations, officials said on Sunday.
Acting on specific inputs about concealed weapons, the joint forces launched the operation on January 25, 2026, at the foothills of Jairolpokpi village in Manipur’s Jiribam district, which borders Assam to the west.
No arrests were made, but a temporary camp allegedly set up by anti-social elements was busted. Following a thorough search of the site, security personnel recovered a large cache of arms and military equipment.
The recovered items included a self-loading rifle with a magazine, several locally made 12-bore guns, improvised launchers locally known as pompi, two walkie-talkie sets, an illumination bomb, two improvised explosive devices, and several empty bomb casings.
A substantial quantity of ammunition was also seized, including live rounds for AK-series rifles, INSAS rifles, .303 rifles, and SLRs, along with magazines for AK and INSAS weapons.
All recovered items were deposited at the Jiribam police station for further legal proceedings, and a case has been registered in connection with the seizure.
Meanwhile, officials noted that eight underground outfits, including the Coordination Committee (CorCom) operating in Manipur, have announced a boycott of Republic Day celebrations and called for an 18-hour statewide bandh on January 26.
