Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh Cyber Crime Police Station (CCPS) has apprehended 22-year-old Gaurav Chetri, a resident of Kashipur in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, in connection with a case involving hacking, impersonation, and online blackmail.

According to the cyber crime unit, the case was registered on January 8 under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 66C and 66D of the Information Technology Act, 2008.

Officials said the investigation began after the victim reported that her Google Drive account had been compromised and her private images were being misused to demand money.

The inquiry revealed that a fake Instagram account had been created in her name, which was used to threaten the circulation of her personal images unless ransom was paid.

Technical checks, including IP tracking and call detail records, helped trace the account to a mobile number connected to the suspect.

A police team, led by CCPS Officer-in-Charge Inspector Bumchu Krong and supported by SI Subhash Tapak, Head Constable KK Tripathi, and Constables Sourav Nath and Manoj Kumar, traveled to Umrangsao in Assam’s Dima Hasao district on Thursday and arrested Chetri following legal procedures.

The team also seized the mobile phone and SIM card used to operate the fraudulent account. Investigations are ongoing to uncover further details.

The cyber unit confirmed that the victimโ€™s social media account had been accessed using a brute-force password attack.

Authorities have urged social media users to adopt strong alphanumeric passwords to safeguard their privacy and prevent hacking incidents.
