Imphal: The Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and Manipur police arrested five cadres from different underground outfits in a series of cordon-and-search operations carried out at their hideouts over the past 36 hours, officials reported on Thursday.
The arrested insurgents, including two teenagers, were accused of being involved in extortion activities in the Imphal West district over the past few weeks, the police said.
In the first phase of the operation, conducted at Mantripukhri Lamlongei Maning Leikai under Heingang Police Station in Imphal East district, three activists of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party โ Noyon group (KCP Noyon) were arrested.
The arrestees were later identified as Chumkham Tabaraj Singh, also known as Thoithoiba, 19, of Lamlai Awang Leikai, Imphal East district; Sanjenbam Mitrajit Singh, also known as Korounganba, 54, of Sega Road, Khwairakpam Leikai, Imphal West district; and Wayengbam Thoungamba, 19, of Sawombung College Gate, Imphal East district.
During the second phase of the operation, an active cadre of the proscribed Kanglei Yaol Kanna Lup โ Socialist Revolutionary Party (KYKL-SOREPA) was apprehended from Uripok Achom Leikai under Imphal Police Station, Imphal West district.
Shamulailatpam Arbin Sharma, also known as Phirepa, 19, of Nongpok Sekmai Makha Leikai, currently residing at Salam Mamang Leikai, Imphal West district, was arrested along with a mobile phone.
In the final phase of the operation, security forces captured another active KYKL cadre from Sekmai Khunou under Sekmai Police Station, Imphal West district.
Shagolsem Lokeshor Singh, 35, also known as Sarat and Ibungo, of Kanto Sabal, Imphal West district, currently at the relief camp in Mantop Yumpham, was arrested.
Authorities seized a mobile phone and two SIM cards from him.
