Guwahati: Bodoland Peopleโs Front (BPF) president and Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief Hagrama Mohilary on Sunday said he has no objection to the United Peopleโs Party Liberal (UPPL) securing representation in the Assam Assembly or joining the state Cabinet after the 2026 elections, but ruled out any alliance with the party in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
Speaking to reporters after laying the foundation stone of a 100-bed, three-storeyed RCC girlsโ hostel at Bineswar Barhma Engineering College here, Mohilary said UPPLโs role could be acceptable at the state or central level, but not within the BTC.
โUPPL has been part of the NDA in the Assembly and in the Cabinet, but not in BTC. We have no objection if the BJP again accommodates UPPL in Dispur or Delhi, but the party has no stake in BTC,โ he said.
Mohilary categorically rejected any understanding with UPPL in the Bodoland region, asserting there was no question of working together in BTR.
Highlighting development initiatives, the BTC chief said several major projects are underway across the region. He informed that a Rs 150-crore mini secretariat project was approved in Udalguri on Saturday.
On preparations for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, Mohilary said groundwork has already begun, with indications that the polls may be held earlier than usual.
โWe have learnt that the elections may take place in April, before Rongali Bihu. Preparations are in full swing, though seat-sharing within the NDA has not been finalised yet,โ he said.
He added that the BPF would seek a larger share of seats in the alliance and expressed confidence that adjustments would be made.
Mohilary also confirmed Prime Minister Narendra Modiโs visit to Assam on January 17 and lauded Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for organising a mass Bagurumba dance performance.
โPrime Minister Modi will visit the state on January 17. A Bagurumba dance involving 10,000 performers will be held in Guwahati. It is encouraging to see folk culture being showcased on a global platform,โ he said.
