Mizoram man arrested
The accused has been identified as Johney Rosangliana, a resident of Lunglei's Bazar Veng neighbourhood, the police said.

Aizawl: A 41-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing an elderly woman in south Mizoram’s Lunglei town, police said in a statement on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Johney Rosangliana, a resident of Lunglei’s Bazar Veng neighbourhood, the police said.

He was arrested on Thursday as a suspect in the murder of K. Vanlalngaii (78), who was found dead inside her residence at Bazar Veng on Wednesday, the statement added.

The victim, a widow, lived alone on the lower floor of an Anganwadi centre in Lunglei’s Bazar Veng locality.

Suspecting foul play in her death, the police formed a special investigation team and launched an inquiry, which resulted in Johney’s arrest on Thursday, the statement said.

After thorough interrogation, the accused admitted his guilt and confessed to the crime, it added.

He was produced before a district court and sent to judicial remand on Friday, the statement said.

Locals claimed that Vanlalngaii had joined the Mizo National Army (MNA) and went underground during the secessionist movement spearheaded by the Mizo National Front (MNF) between 1966 and 1986.

She lived alone after her husband, Lawmthanga, who was also a member of the MNA, passed away, they said.

On Christmas Eve, the victim received donations from generous donors, which might have tempted the perpetrator, they added.
