Dibrugarh: The Centre for Social Work Studies (CSWS), Dibrugarh University, formally launched its community-driven initiative “Gift a Childhood” at the Guest House Conference Hall, Dibrugarh University in Assam, on Monday.

The initiative aims to bring joy, creativity, and learning opportunities to children from vulnerable and underserved communities across Assam and the North-East.

It seeks contributions of new or gently used toys, children’s books, art supplies, sports items, and musical instruments, which will be collected, refurbished, and distributed responsibly.

The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. Ansai Bathau Basumatary, followed by an insightful presentation by Dr. Monuj Dutta, who underscored how collective participation can support marginalized children by expanding access to meaningful childhood experiences. He highlighted the importance of sustainability, emphasizing reuse and recycling as core practices of the initiative.

Delivering his inaugural address, Prof. Jiten Hazarika, Vice-Chancellor, Dibrugarh University, congratulated CSWS for initiating a compassionate effort that aligns with the university’s commitment to child development and social responsibility.

Dr. Paramananda Sonowal, Registrar, Dibrugarh University, addressed the gathering thereafter, extended his appreciation to the Centre, and expressed his willingness to personally contribute to the initiative alongside institutional support.

Former Chairperson of CSWS, Prof. Joyanta Borbora, applauded the initiative and pledged to donate a swing, inspiring many attendees to make immediate contributions.

The encouraging response reflected strong community support and enthusiasm. Several attendees, including the students and teachers of the Centre, came forward with contributions immediately after the programme, signalling a strong and heartfelt community response.

As part of its mission, Gift a Childhood will reach children from economically weaker families, tea-garden and tribal communities, disaster-prone regions, and urban settlements. It will also offer MSW students practical experience in community outreach and programme management.

The Centre invited individuals and organisations interested in donating items to contact 9101368821 or 6001223259. Collection, sorting, and distribution will be managed by MSW students and volunteers to ensure transparency and equitable reach.

Speaking on the initiative’s broader vision, CSWS stated that “Gift a Childhood” is more than a donation drive — it is a movement to restore childhood joy through compassion, shared responsibility, and sustainable action.
