Shillong: Meghalayaโ€™s Voice of the People Party (VPP) in Nongkrem constituency has condemned threats by the banned militant group Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) against its leaders, including party president and MLA Ardent Basaiawmoit, The Shillong Times reported.

In a statement on Friday, VPP Nongkrem constituency secretary H. Riang described the threats as a serious attempt to intimidate democratically elected representatives and undermine the democratic process.

He called the actions unacceptable and demanded that those responsible be held accountable.

Riang said the threats, which have caused concern among party members and the public, reflect a disregard for the interests of the Khasi community and society at large. โ€œAs supporters of democracy, we pray for the safety of our leadersโ€ฆ so that they can continue serving the people and the indigenous community without fear,โ€ he said.

The controversy arose after the HNLC warned Basaiawmoit earlier this week against acting like a โ€œBlei Khyndewโ€ (God of the Earth). The group criticized the MLA for opposing its alleged interference in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) matters, particularly the delays in issuing the Sanad to the elected Syiem of Hima Sohra.

Basaiawmoit responded firmly to the threats, stating he is willing to face any consequences, including risks to his life, if it ensures better governance for Meghalaya.

He stressed that the VPPโ€™s leadership of the KHADC is based on the peopleโ€™s mandate and remains free from influence by any militant group.

Basaiawmoit reiterated the partyโ€™s commitment to reform and accountability within traditional institutions, noting that raising concerns about matters in Hima Sohra should be seen as serving the public interest, not as provocation.
