Imphal: Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) of Sadar Hills in Kangpokpi district have taken a historic decision to stop poppy cultivation completely from New Year 2026.
The unanimous resolution came at a Cabinet Meeting of all CSOs held in Kangpokpi on December 5. The meeting saw participation from the Sadar Hills Chiefs’ Association, Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills, tribal bodies, student organisations, womenโs groups, youth clubs and several community organisations.
To turn the decision into action, the CSOs launched a series of district-wide consultations with stakeholders and village authorities. They held a CSO meeting in Kangpokpi on December 10. A joint consultation with village chiefs from Southwest Sadar Hills, GamgiphaiโTaphou and Twilang areas took place at Bongmol village on December 16. Another joint meeting with village chiefs from Ukhrul, Bungpi and Saikul areas was held at Saikul Community Hall on December 19.
The CSOs said village chiefs and organisations across these meetings unanimously agreed to enforce a total ban on poppy cultivation from 2026.
They said the decision aims to protect society from the serious social, environmental, economic and moral impacts of poppy cultivation. They termed the move a reflection of the collective will of the people of Kangpokpi district.
The CSOs also warned that any village chief or authority violating the resolution will face strict action.
They described the declaration as a firm and united stand to protect the land, maintain social harmony and secure the future of the younger generations.
