The Darrang district administration has taken initiative to promote the handloom products of local artisans in the global market with a special marketing brand called ‘Darrangini’. This was stated by Pankaj Chakravorty, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Darrang at Mangaldai on Tuesday.

“In the present day context of vastly competitive global market, every product needs to have a unique characteristics for marketing which is popularly known in the promotional business as the unique selling point or USP. Considering this, we are taking initiative to promote our local handloom products in the brand name ‘Darrangini’,” said ADC Chakravorty.

Chakravorty said this while addressing a meet of progressive handloom artisans and entrepreneurs of the district on the occasion of the fourth National Handloom Day organized by the District Handloom and Textile department at its office premises in Gerimari, Mangaldai on Tuesday.

The ADC urged upon the potential local artisans to take up the industry with scientific and professional motive and prove themselves fit in the global market, earn themselves and also help thousands of unemployed locals to earn themselves too.

Speaking on the occasion, PK Goswami, Lead District Bank Manager, pointed out that the district has a bad record of recovery of bank loans in the past, however, keeping in mind the high potentiality of this industry in the district the credit plan for the sector in this current fiscal year has been increased to Rs 2 crore. But he lamented that no artisan has so far approached him for any loan.

Earlier in his welcome address, Assistant Director, Handloom and Textiles, Darrang, Bipul Kalita highlighted that Sipajhar and Kalaigaon areas are two potential producers of Nooni yarn, but due to ignorance and foresightedness of the local artisans this raw Nooni yarn is taken away by the traders of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts and it again reaches Darrang market as a finished products. .

The meet also witnessed felicitation to nine prominent handloom artisans of the district with a letter of citation and a gamosa. District Development Manager, NABARD, Biswajit Deb, District Public Relation Officer Manimala Gogoi, woman activist Nilima Devi, progressive entrepreneur Sewali Goswami Kalita were the distinguished guests among others who attended the function.
