Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh has witnessed violence clashes during last week with students protesting over road safety following the death of two teenagers who were mowed down by a speeding bus, according to a report by Aljazeera.

Thousands of students from various schools and colleges on Sunday started controlling traffic in Dhaka, for the eighth consecutive day even as police fired tear gas at protesting students and shut down mobile internet connections.

A number of journalists were also beaten and had their cameras taken away, reportedly by ruling Awami League party members, according to the report.

The report further stated that dozens of protesters were attacked by people alleged to be ruling party activists, some armed with machetes, in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, telecommunications companies were ordered to suspend 3G and 4G services for a period of 24 hours on late Saturday.

Bangladesh’s transport sector is widely seen as corrupt, unregulated and dangerous, and as news of the teenagers’ deaths spread rapidly on social media they became a catalyst for an outpouring of anger against the government.
