Assam University at Silchar, which is in the thick of controversy following the alleged sex scandal of a teacher, removed the tainted teacher Dr Sudipto Sarkar from the post of HOD of Agricultural Engineering Department but with a ‘rider’. Though Dr Sarkar was shunted out from the post of HoD,the University authorities allowed him to go on leave.
The Assam University Students’ Union smelled a rat and questioned the University authorities’ motive behind this move allowing a ‘criminal’ like Dr Sarkar to go on leave.
The AUSU has set a fresh deadline till Monday next to suspend Dr Sarkar and not allow him to enter the university campus until the probe is complete. While on one hand he has been removed from the post of HOD, he has been granted to go on leave, which shows the University authorities are trying to cover up his misdeeds, AUSU President Milan Das told Northeast Now.

The victim student too pleaded before Northeast Now to terminate Sarkar and not allow him to do such things in the future.
A rally too was brought out by the students inside the university campus and a memorandum setting the deadline has been submitted to the Registrar. The Vice Chancellor of Assam University Dilip Chandra Nath is out of station, and away from the storm that is brewing as of now.
The angry students of the university subsequently removed the chair of the VC from his chamber. The students said they would return the chair of VC only after termination of accused professor Sarkar.
“We will not return the chair of the VC until Sarkar is terminated from his job,” said a protesting student.
Accused Dr Sarkar had allegedly made sexual advances to a student of the department who refused to comply with his indecent proposal.
Dr Sudipto Sarkar, allegedly did so with many students in the past and got away with it. But as the victim has not acted as per his wishes, he has failed her thrice in ‘viva’ since January this year. Dr Sarkar, even allegedly asked the student to join him for a drink at his quarters and even provide the sexual favours he wanted, for which, he kept sending her Whatsapp messages at a regular interval.
Unable to resist anymore such sexual advances, the victim girl wrote letters to the President of India, Prime Minister of India, Chief Minister of Assam and Vice Chancellor of Assam University on July 16 this year.
Following this letter, the Assam University’s Internal Complaints Committee took up the matter next day (July 17), but instead of providing her justice, the matter boomeranged, and she started getting threats from students and teachers alike to take back the complaint and clear the name of Dr Sudipto Sarkar.
With nowhere else to go, the matter finally was divulged to the Assam University’s apex student body, AUSU, which briefed the media Thursday evening at their campus in Dargakona and launched protests against the erring teacher of the University.
