Students stage a protest against the government's decision to cut more than 70 trees for construction of a bridge in Bharalumukh area in Guwahati.

Guwahati: Residents at Bharalumukh in Guwahati are gearing up to protest the construction of a new bridge at Railway Gate No. 5 of the city.

The Citizens’ Coordination Committee is going to organize a human chain protest on November 9 to voice their concerns over the lack of community consultation in the project’s planning and execution.

The residents are particularly alarmed by the environmental impact of the bridge, which is expected to lead to the felling of over 70 trees in the area.

They argue that the project should be halted until a thorough environmental impact assessment is conducted and community input is incorporated into the decision-making process.

“We are not against development. However, we believe that such significant projects should not be implemented without the consent and participation of the local community,” said Khanindra Lal Sharma, President of the Citizens’ Coordination Committee.

The protest aims to highlight the importance of transparent and inclusive development practices. The organizers urge all concerned citizens to join the human chain and support the cause of community-led development.

Earlier on Monday, several students staged a protest at Bharalumukh in Guwahati against the Assam government’s decision to chop down over 70 trees for bridge construction.

They raised concerns about environmental impact and the need to preserve green spaces in the community.
