Shillong: In a mid-year revision, the Meghalaya State Electricity Regulatory Commission (MSERC) has announced a new electricity tariff, effective December 2024.

The revised rates make electricity cheaper for industrial high-tension (HT) consumers but more expensive for domestic users.

For domestic consumers, fixed charges were revised to Rs 90 per kilowatt per month (up from Rs 80) and Rs 5.55 per kilowatt for the first 100 units, Rs 5.65 per kilowatt for the next 100 units.

For Industrial HT consumers: fixed charges were put at Rs 310 per kilowatt per month while energy charge were at Rs 6.51 per kilowatt.

The revised tariffs are expected to benefit industries, with a reduction of Rs 1.29 per kilowatt from the previous year’s tariff of Rs 7.80 per kilowatt. However, domestic consumers will bear the burden of increased rates.

The MSERC, now headed by Chandan Kumar Mondol, has ordered the revised bills to be implemented from December 2024 for all consumer categories.
