Meghalaya on Friday has sounded alert on formalin-laced fish being sold in the State.

Meghalaya Government has asked the Food and Civil Supplies and the Health and Family Welfare departments to conduct a study on the various kinds of fish coming into the State from other parts of the country.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday during an interaction with the media in Shillong said that it is important to check if the fishes coming from outside met the safety standards or not.

Notably, harmful formalin-laced fish had been seized in the three north-eastern states of Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.

Formalin is the chemical used to preserve bodies and prevent its decay in mortuaries.

Unscrupulous traders use formalin to preserve the fishes imported from other states.

Conrad further said that the State Government has given necessary instructions to conduct a research as to what kind of chemicals were used and accordingly decisions will be made.
