Itanagar: The All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU) has deferred its proposed 36-hour bandh in the Itanagar Capital Region of Arunachal Pradesh, scheduled to start on Monday, following an intervention by the Nyishi Elite Society (NES).

The decision was announced by ANSU president Nabam Dodum on Sunday night, citing the upcoming Independence Day celebration as a reason for calling off the strike.

Dodum informed that the ANSU and NES will meet with the state government after August 15 to discuss the union’s 10-point demands, including the repeal of the Arunachal Pradesh District-Based Entrepreneur and Professional (Incentive Development & Promotion) Act, 2015, and restrictions on non-indigenous contractors participating in developmental projects.

The NES had expressed concern over the issue taking a communal turn and urged the ANSU to withdraw the bandh call.

A meeting between the ANSU and NES on Sunday resulted in the NES assuring that all the demands would be addressed.

The state government had earlier appealed to the ANSU to cancel the bandh and requested the NES to dissuade the union from imposing it. Home Minister Mama Natung assured that the government is committed to addressing the grievances of any organization and people.

A meeting between the ANSU and the government is scheduled to take place after August 15, where all stakeholders will discuss the demands and work towards finding a solution.
