Guwahati : Former Bollywood actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut is facing backlash from netizens after she made a critical and controversial comment on wrestler Vinesh Phogat ’s historic win at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Phogat made history by defeating Yusneylis Lopez to become the first female Indian wrestler to reach the final at the Olympics.
With her stupendous performance, Phogat assured India of its fourth Olympic 2024 medal by beating the wrestler of Cuba in the women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling semifinal.
She will take on either Otgonjargal Dolgorjav or Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the final on August 7,2024.
As congratulatoty notes began pouring in for Phogat, Ranaut stirred a controversy by posting a critical message for the wrestler on Instagram Stories.
Kangana Ranaut pointed out that Vinesh Phogat got ‘the opportunity to represent the nation’ even after participating in protests against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and also raising the slogan “Modi Teri kabar khudegi” (Modi, your grave will be dug).
She also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing Phogat with best training, coaches and facilities for competing at the Olympics.
Her story reads, “Fingers crossed for India’s first Gold Medal…. Vinesh Phogat at one point took part in protests where she raised the slogans of ‘ Modi teri Kabr khudegi’”
“Yet she was given the opportunity to represent the nation and best of the training, coaches and facilities. Beauty of democracy and a great leader,” it added.
However, Ranaut’s comment met with severe backlash altogether on social media.
Many netizens called her out for never supporting the wrestlers during the time of the protests and also for making inappropriate remarks on Phogat’s achievements in Paris Olympics 2024.
“It’s time to call out @KanganaTeam for her absolute filth. Even as #VineshPhogat makes India proud at #Olympics, she’s busy mudslinging her name and spreading fake news Did I miss biggest feminist #KanganaRanaut speaking on #BrijBhushan? No, as it never happened,” one wrote
