Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that his government plans to introduce a new law criminalizing ‘Love Jihad’, with penalties including life imprisonment for those convicted.

This announcement was made during an extended session of the Assam BJP’s state executive meeting in Guwahati.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We will soon bring a law imposing life imprisonment for those involved in ‘Love Jihad’.”

“We are committed to securing the rights of Assamese people step by step, regardless of opposition efforts,” said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Assam chief minister informed that the proposed legislation will be introduced during the upcoming monsoon session of the Assam assembly later this month.

In addition to this, CM Sarma revealed plans for a new domicile policy, under which only individuals born in Assam will be eligible for government jobs.

He criticized the previous Congress regime, claiming, “During Congress, 30 percent of Assam police jobs were offered to a certain community. We are documenting this in a forthcoming publication.”

Sarma stated that his government is commited to prioritizing indigenous people in the allocation of government jobs.

He mentioned that the promised “one lakh government jobs” would be cleared once the complete list is published.

Further, the Assam chief minister announced measures to regulate land sales between different religious communities.

Transactions will now require the chief minister’s clearance.

“Thousands of hectares of land have been acquired by a particular community, but we will restore this land to the indigenous people,” Sarma stated.

He stated that while the government cannot outright ban land transactions between Hindus and Muslims, consent from the chief minister will be necessary for such deals.

Additionally, land belonging to indigenous and backward communities will no longer be transferable.
