The Meghalaya Police is putting into use new software applications to monitor offensive and inflammatory posts on the social media while arrested two persons for their alleged involvement in making offensive, inflammatory and derogatory remarks.

The new software applications are being used by the Cyber Crime Wing.

Police arrested Manbhalang Nongspung and Fuller Strong Kharsyiemlieh so far.

Meghalaya CID Special SP, R Muthu said the Cyber Crime Wing has started taking legal action as per provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in various cases.

So far, 11 cases have been registered for offensive, inflammatory and derogatory remarks on the social media and a number of persons have been questioned.

Mobile phones of the accused were seized which have evidences of inciting materials which the accused had posted or forwarded.

“Action is being taken in view of the fact that posting of inflammatory and inciting materials on social media platforms can have serious consequences,” Muthu said, adding that the role of the social media with respect to the disturbances in Shillong had drawn the attention of all members of the society.

The Meghalaya Police has also taken help from various Central Government agencies and departments as well as from a technological institute in Delhi to enhance the capabilities of the Cyber Crime Wing in the State.
