Agartala: Jitendra Chaudhury, the Tripura CPIM state committee secretary, asserted that the upcoming three-tier Panchayat elections are crucial for the rural population of Tripura.

During a nomination filing rally in Agartala on Thursday, he alleged that since the BJP’s rise to power in 2018, democratic processes have been compromised, turning elections into mere facades.

Chaudhury pointed out that the Tripura State Election Commission has finally announced the election dates for the three-tier Panchayats after much delay.

“The notifications have been issued, and the nomination filing process has begun. Today, we are filing nominations for the West Tripura Zila Parishad. Since 2018, the BJP-IPFT coalition has ruled through deceitful promises, stifling democracy. All subsequent elections, including the recent Lok Sabha polls, have been farcical,” he claimed.

He emphasized the significance of these elections, stating that the CPIM has continuously urged the State Election Commission (SEC) to ensure fair conduct.

“However, the state government and SEC have failed to provide any reassurances. With 80% of the population residing in villages and the economy heavily reliant on them, these elections are vital for our state,” Chaudhury remarked.

Pabitra Kar, CPIM state committee member and Secretary of the All India Krishak Sabha state unit, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the Left Front’s readiness for the elections.

“Our candidates have begun submitting their nomination papers to West District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar. We will soon complete nominations for all seats, starting today with 35 seats for the Zila Parishad,” he added.

The three-tier Panchayat elections in Tripura are scheduled for August 8, with the counting of votes set for August 12.
