SILCHAR: Following violence in Jiribam district of Manipur, approximately 600 residents have fled to Cachar district in Assam for safety.
Police in Cachar district of Assam have responded to the situation by intensifying security measures along the state’s border with Manipur.
According to Manipur police, several homes belonging to both Meitei and Kuki communities were set ablaze by unidentified miscreants in Jiribam district.
This outbreak of violence was triggered by the recent murder of a local resident.
The situation in Jiribam district of Manipur remains tense as authorities work to restore peace and provide relief to the displaced individuals.
SP of Cachar district in Assam stated, “In response to the violence that erupted in Manipur’s Jiribam area four days ago, we have intensified security along the bordering regions.”
“We have deployed security personnel and special commando forces who are patrolling all border areas. The peace-loving locals are cooperating with us,” the SP said.
He continued, “Nearly 600 people from Jiribam in Manipur have fled to Assam and are taking shelter with relatives. We are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining a peaceful environment on Assam’s side.”
“Additionally, the local MLA has convened a peace committee meeting. We will take strong lawful action against anyone attempting to create disturbances on our side,” Mahanta said.
