AGARTALA: Tipra Motha party chief Pradyot Debbarma, on Tuesday (May 21), stated that the party “would not permit” the government to enforce the citizenship amendment act (CAA) in tribal areas of Tripura.

This statement came in response to accusations by Tripura Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman, who alleged that Debbarma’s silence on the CAA indicated his compliance with the BJP.

It may be mentioned here that the Tipra Motha party is a constituent of the BJP-led government in Tripura.

In response to Barman’s criticism, Debbarma asserted, “He asked why we did not raise voice against CAA. Pradyot Bikram Manikya is still fighting CAA in the Supreme Court. We will not allow CAA to be implemented in TTAADC (Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council) areas.”

Debbarma emphasized the party’s commitment to defending the land rights of all members of the Tiprasa community, highlighting that this provision was a part of the agreement the party had reached with the central government to address the issues of Tripura’s tribal population.
