GUWAHATI: Highlander Brigade, the passionate fans’ club of Indian Super League team Northeast United FC, is gearing up for an eventful offseason.
Club president Abhishek Lahkar announced plans for several exciting football activities, including the 2nd edition of the Ao Sangma Shield football tournament, the All Assam Amateur Community Futsal Tournament, and the HB E-football tournament.
“We are thrilled to organize these tournaments in collaboration with the Assam Football Association,” stated Abhishek.

Highlander Brigade, comprised of students and professionals, is committed to revolutionizing fan culture in the region.
Their goal is to promote football, the Northeast, and its vibrant football culture, transitioning from passive viewers to enthusiastic supporters in the stands.
Reflecting on their previous initiatives, Abhishek shared, “Since our inception in 2017, we aimed to do more than just support Northeast United FC. Hosting football tournaments was a natural progression. Last year, we successfully organized the inaugural edition of the Ao Sangma Shield, and we plan to make it even bigger this year.”
Abhishek further emphasized the tournament’s significance in providing a platform for local talent to showcase their skills and gain exposure.
“Footballers in Assam lack opportunities to play competitively. Our tournaments aim to fill that void,” he added.
Vikas Baruah, a founding member and advisory committee member, shed light on the club’s funding model.
“We rely on membership fees and voluntary contributions from our members. Profits from our events are reinvested into club activities to promote football and fan culture.”
Pratyush Bhattacharyya, a student and field team leader, highlighted the club’s recent achievements, including unveiling Asia’s largest handmade tifo during a match against Mumbai City FC.
“We also engage in social work activities, supporting flood victims and promoting sports personalities like Mirabai Chanu,” he said.
Arnab Pathak, another field team leader, shared his experience organizing the Ao Sangma Shield tournament.
“It was challenging but rewarding. This year’s edition will be even better, building on the lessons learned from the first event,” he expressed optimistically.
