Guwahati: A woman was killed by a wild elephant that had wandered out of the forest in Tinsukia, Assam on Tuesday.

A local stated that the woman was doing her chores when all of a sudden, the elephant came near her house in upper Ubongaon. 

The woman identified as Sushila Konwar attempted to escape from the elephant but something provoked it to chase and attack her.

The woman was rescued by locals, however, she succumbed to her injuries while being taken to the hospital.

Locals said that another woman was also injured in another village by the same elephant.

The other woman is said to be in a critical condition.

Further, the villagers blamed the forest department for not warning them about the elephant.

The forest department, allegedly, had inputs about the elephant coming out of the forest. 

Some villagers claimed that forest officials had been attempting to chase the elephant back to the forest but they failed to notify people living around the area.

An investigation has been initiated and attempts to send the jumbo back to the forest is still on.
