The opposition Congress on Wednesday claimed its senior MLA, Martin M Danggo from Ranikor constituency would not take any “wrong” decision.

Addressing reporters at Congress Bhavan on Wednesday, Congress MLA and spokesperson of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), Zenith Sangma claimed that all the 21 MLAs are intact.

“We have got trust in all the MLAs and we assure that all the MLAs are intact and will work together.  We are playing the role of opposition in the right perspective in the interest of the people of the state,” Zenith said.

On the announcement made by Danggo that he would resign from the party and as MLA, Zenith said that “nothing is final in politics. If somebody says he or she will do something, then it is still in the future tense. I am very much confident that Danggo is very senior and matured politician and cannot take any wrong decision. There are some agendas which cannot be spelled out at this moment. Before going to Ranikor, I spoke to him on June 6, and he did not say anything.”

On the dissolution of the Ranikor Block Congress Committee, Zenith said that some communication was made to the party leadership in the block level and unit level.

“After collecting all inputs then only the party leadership will be able spell out the next step to be taken. The dissolution will be done by the district committee only, and they are not authorized to dissolve at their level,” he said.

On the long pending demand to make Ranikor a civil sub division, Zenith said that the MLA did not demand for civil sub division but only an Administrative unit.

On Tuesday, Danggo has made public announcement at Ranikor in South West Khasi Hills district, that he would leave the Congress and resign as MLA to join the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) on the day of the inauguration of the Ranikor Civil Sub Division by Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma.

Conrad and other leaders visited Ranikor on Tuesday.

The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government led by the NPP has assured the people of Ranikor constituency that the Ranikor Administrative Unit would be upgraded to a Civil Sub Division.

During the public function, Congress leaders and workers from all 65 primary units resigned en masse and joined the NPP.

Kitborlang Nongrem, president of the South West Khasi Hills District Congress Committee, Ranikor Block Congress Committee President, German Nongsiang and all leaders and workers of 65 primary units of the Ranikor Block Congress Committee resigned and dissolved the Block Congress Committee.

The Congress flag was also lowered down while the NPP flag was unfurled which marked the dissolution of the Ranikor Block Congress Committee.

Asked about the lowering down of Congress flag at the function, Zenith said the party will take action as it is a very serious offence, and it is a humiliation and insult to the party.

“Every political party should be honoured. Not only Congress, but other political parties also in a democracy,” Zenith said.
