Kedarnath Temple which is one of the most famous shrines of Lord Shiva in India opened its doors for devotees on April 25, 2023

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami offered prayers at Kedarnath Temple after its opening amid a holy atmosphere comprising of chanting of shlokas and loud drumbeats

Kedarnath Temple, located on the bank of Mandakini river at an altitude of 3584 meters above sea level, has been decorated with 35 quintals of flowers ahead of its opening

A helicopter showered lots of flowers petals on the thousands of pilgrims who had lined up for praying at the temple and chants of 'Jai Bholenath' and 'Har-Har Mahadev' slogans filled the air

The great Indian epic Mahabharata narrates that Lord Shiva took the form of a bull to escape from being worshipped by the Pandavas who came to Him to seek forgiveness for killing their relatives in the Kurukshetra War

While fleeing from the Pandavas, Lord Shiva dived into the ground at Kedarnath leaving behind its hump on the surface at the exact place where the Holy Sanctum is now present

This Hump inside the temple is in the form of a conical rock formation and is worshipped as Lord Shiva manifested in his Sadashiva form.

Kedarnath Temple which had been constructed with extremely large, heavy and evenly cut grey slabs of stones is surrounded by lofty snow covered peaks

The best time to visit Kedarnath Temple is from May to November and the last destination that is accessible by vehicles is Gaurikund from where pilgrims have to trek for 16 km to reach the temple or avail any Dandi, Kandi or Horse services

The nearest airport to Gaurikund is Jolly Grant Airport and taxis regularly operates from the latter to the former. Meanwhile, the closest railway station from Gaurikund is Rishikesh and pilgrims can easily take any vehicles from the station to reach their destination
