There is no permanent friend or foe in politics – goes the adage. Mizoram has proved it. In an unprecedented move, BJP and Congress forge alliance to form Chakma Autonomous District Council. BJP and Congress are now alliance partners in CADC. Sounds strange but true. The new alliance will be known as United Legislature Party

BJP once gave clarion calls to a ‘Congress-mukt Bharat’. This has proved that in politics only thing that is permanent is the greed for power.

The state BJP leaders in a press conference on Wednesday afternoon said that BJP’s five elected member of district council (MDC) would be supported by the six elected Congress council members.

“A new council government will be formed on May 4, the alliance has already nominated BJP MDC Santi Jiban Chakma as the chief executive member of the new council government,” Judy Zohmingliani, Vice President of Mizoram state BJP said.

State General Secretary Vanlalhmuaka said the decision to form a new council government was a big step for the BJP in Mizoram. “Despite the party being the youngest entrant in the political map of Mizoram, we have managed to form a council government, this is a historic moment for the BJP in Mizoram,” Vanlalhmuaka said.

The election to the 20-member council was held on April 20 last and results for 19 seats were declared on April 25. MNF won eight, Congress won six and BJP won five seats, while the result of one seat was not declared after high court order following a petition filed by the MNF candidate.

Initially, the MNF, being one of the constituents in the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance was confident in forming the council government with the BJP. But the BJP council members signed an agreement with the Congress to form a new government.

Reports said that the Central leadership of the BJP felt that it against their principle to ally with the Congress and the BJP-Congress post poll alliance was not officially accepted.

“After several rounds of discussion with our central leaders, it was decided that since coalition government would be formed under the banner of United Legislature Party, we are not literally allying with the Congress party, but have a common ideology of forming the council member under a new legislature party,” publicity secretary of the Mizoram state BJP said.

Mizoram is the last Congress-ruled state out of seven states in Northeast. BJP which is in power in Tripura, Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh and part of coalition governments in Nagaland and Meghalaya, at the moment has to settle with a merger with its political enemy to make a mark on the administration of the state.
