Khongjom Day was observed in Manipur on Monday by paying floral tributes to the martyrs of 1891 at the historic Khongjom War memorial site at Kheba hillock.
The site is about 35 km south of Imphal in Thoubal district .

Being a state holiday, the Khongjom Day is observed as a state level function on April 23 every year for the brave sons of Manipur who made the supreme sacrifice in the last battle of independence popularly known as ‘Khongjom War’ against the Britishers on April 23, 1891.
Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla and Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh led the public in paying tributes to the departed souls at the martyrs’ memorial located on top of the hillock and statue of Paona Brajabashi at its foothill.
Recalling the historic Khongjom War, both the Governor Dr Heptulla and Chief Minister N Biren in their speeches reminded the gathering how the brave soldiers of those days fought against the mighty Britishers who had occupied half of the world.

They also appealed to every community living in the state to work together for a united and progressive Manipur.
Governor Dr Heptulla also appealed to take a decision on this historic day to make the state most developed and number one state in the country.
Manipur assembly Speaker Yumnam Khemchand, Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar, council of ministers, MLAs, state chief secretary Dr J Suresh Babu, DGP Manipur LM Khaute led top brass of civil and police besides the public also attended Khongjom day celebration.
A play based on the historic Khongjom battle and a traditional musical sequence was also staged during the celebration.
