The Assam Government would take adequate measures to preserve the rich culture and heritage of the Kumar community of the state.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday said this while taking part as chief guest in the open session of the 1st biennial session of All Assam Kumar Yuba Chatra Sanmilan, which was held at Salmara in Majuli district.
Underlining the contributions of the Kumar community in the field of pottery and traditional boat making in the state, Chief Minister Sonowal said that the community has been keeping these endangered art forms alive challenging all odds.
He vowed to take all necessary measures for sustainable growth of these art forms and to add newer dimensions to them to attract more tourists.
Sonowal also recalled the contributions of legendary Nibaran Bora and social worker Kesavram Bora, who belonged to the Kumar community.
He informed that the government would install two life-size statues of these two personalities so that the new generation becomes more aware about their role in the development of Assam as well as Majuli.
He also directed the Majuli Deputy Commissioner to identify land for the same.
The Chief Minister also stated in his speech that multiple steps have been initiated by the state government for protection of Majuli island from flood and erosion.
He also informed that the government is mulling legislation of stringent laws to deal with crimes against women and sought people’s support in fighting against this social scourge.
Sonowal also highlighted various development programmes implemented by the central and state governments for the welfare of the people.
He said that the central government has distributed 10 crore LPG cylinders under ‘PM Ujjwala Yojana’ in the country and launched ‘Deen Dayal Upadhyay Rural Electrification Scheme’ to benefit the under privileged.
MLAs Bimal Bora and Binod Hazarika, president of All Assam Kumar Yuba Chatra Sanmila Hemanta Bora, Majuli DC Deba Prasad Mishra and host of other dignitaries were present in the open session among others.
