BJP MLA Shiladitya Dev

Hojai legislator Shiladitya Dev would meet External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj in New Delhi on Monday to discuss Mousumi Das case.

21-year-old Mousumi of Dharakuna village in Assam’s Karimganj district had eloped with a 22-year old Bangladeshi youth to the neighbouring country last month.

Sources said Mosumi, the student of a local college, met the youth identified as Numan Badshah when he had attended a fair in Karimganj in February.

Dev on Sunday said here that he would urge Union Minister Swaraj to take necessary steps to bring back Mousumi from Bangladesh besides seeking a high level probe into the case.

The Hojai MLA claimed that Bangladesh government has pressured Mousumi to convert to Islam. “She was forced to make statement before camera that she converted to Islam by choice,” Dev alleged.

A video on social media shows Mousumi, clad in a burkha, saying she went to Bangladesh on her own volition and converted to Islam after marrying Numan.

Dev further alleged that Mousumi was compelled to wear burkha putting mekhela-chador aside.

Sources in Dhaka said Mousumi was arrested from Demra in Dhaka on April 3 for entering Bangladesh without valid travel documents and was produced before a court on April 4.

She was granted bail on April 5 after which she went to Numan’s house.

Patharkandi legislator Krishnendu Paul on Saturday had claimed Mousumi did not go to Bangladesh by choice but was kidnapped by Numan.

He suspects it to be a case of “love jihad” and alleged the girl had been converted to Islam without her consent.

Paul claimed many facts would come to light if the matter was thoroughly probed and the “love jihad” angle would be revealed once Mousumi is brought back and interrogated.
