A 1955 Mercedes-Benz becomes world's most expensive car to be auctioned

The car was one of just two 1955 300 SLR Uhlenhaut coupes

It was sold at a secret auction at the brand’s museum in Germany

It was sold to a private buyer for 135 million euros of 142,769,250 dollars

The car was created by Mercedes-Benz’s former racing director Rudolf Uhlenhaut

Although made for racing, it was withdrawn from racing in 1955

A disastrous crash at the Le Mans endurance race led to the withdrawal

The crash injured hundreds of spectators and killed over 80 people, including Mercedes’s driver

The car has an eight-cylinder, 2982-cc engine developing up to 310 horsepower

It is able to reach a maximum speed in excess of 300 km/h
