Mizoram reported 1,280 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday- 1,057 more than the previous day- taking the state’s tally to 1, 53,758, a health department official said.
The death toll rose to 573 as an 87-year-old man from Lunglei district has succumbed to the infection at Zoram Medical College (ZMC) in Aizawl in the last 24 hours, he said.
Mamit assembly constituency MLA Lalzirliana and at least 227 children were among the newly infected people, he said.
The MLA has developed symptoms of COVID-19 and has admitted at Zoram Medical College (ZMC) on Monday, he said.
The single-day positivity rate increased to 17 per cent from 11.27 per cent the previous day, according to the official.
Aizawl district reported the highest number of fresh cases at 551, followed by Lunglei (151) and Khawzawl (114).
Of the 1,280 newly infected patients, 49 have returned from different states and 38 of them tested positive for COVID-19, the official said.
The northeastern state now has 8,869 active cases, while 830 people have recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, taking the total recoveries to 1, 44,316.
The recovery rate among COVID-19 patients is 93.85 per cent and the death rate is 0.37 per cent.
The northeastern state has so far tested 15.88 lakh samples for COVID-19 and out of these 7,515 samples were tested on Monday.
The government has begun random testing for COVID-19 in Aizawl on Monday during which 19 were found infected with COVID-19.
The random test is being conducted at Zodin square area in Aizawl on Tuesday.
According to state immunization officer Dr. Lalmuanawma Jongte, Over 7.77 lakh people have been inoculated till Monday and of this 6 lakh people have received the full dose.
