Despite the surge in Covid-19 cases and detection of Omicron variant in Meghalaya, the State Government has ruled out the possibility of imposing lockdown in the Northeastern state.
“People have already suffered a lot due to Covid-19 and previous lockdown. The question of imposing lockdown does not arise as of now. Lockdown will be the last resort to tackle the pandemic,” Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said on Wednesday.
He however said that as a precautionary measure the state government has decided to extend the winter vacation for schools and colleges till January 24.
Tynsong said that the hospitals are fully equipped with necessary facilities including beds and oxygen supplies to deal with the Covid situation in the state.
The Minister called upon the people to get vaccinated and said that the third wave has already started and people will be safe only with vaccines, he said.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Wednesday said the ongoing winter vacation was supposed to be over on January 10 but it has been extended till January 24.
The government had closed down schools and colleges for the winter vacation in the third week of December 2021.
