A 71-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Balijan Nepali Gaon at Digboi in upper Assam Tinsukia district on Saturday.
The deceased person has been identified as Nirmal Singh Chetry of Digboi.
The incident took place when he went to a paddy field to cut the grass for the goat.
According to reports, the villagers went out looking for him when he did not return in the afternoon and found him dead in the paddy field.
“Man and elephant conflict has been rising due to shrinking of forest covers. Digboi is worst hit in terms of man-elephant conflict,” said a forest official.
Bogapani elephant corridor is one of the biggest elephant corridors in Asia but the elephant corridor was encroached by humans and as a result, the elephant facing problem to pass through the corridor.
In the last month, a 45-year-old Rajib Gogoi was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Bojaloni under Margherita West Range forest office of Digboi Forest Division in upper Assam Tinsukia.
