The ‘draconian’ Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is likely to be lifted from Assam.
This was hinted by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
CM Sarma indicated this while interacting with editors of media outlets and senior journalists in Assam.
“After four months the AFSPA will come for a renewal. Then the Assam government will take a pragmatic decision in consultation with the home department,” said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Assam chief minister also said that insurgency by the tribals have come to an end in Assam.
Sarma further said that the Paresh Baruah-led ULFA-Independent has shown keen interest in peace talks.
“Sovereignty demand of the ULFA-I is the only stumbling block in the peace talks between the government and the ULFA-I,” Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
He added: “I dare to say that it is the beginning of the end. We are hopeful of a peaceful settlement with the ULFA-I.”
