A lecture on ‘Brahmaputra valley and Tibetan Culture’ was organised on Monday by the Department of Anthropology, DHS Kanoi College in association with Free Tibet-A Voice from Assam at Srimanta Sankardev Sabhakakhya in DHS Kanoi College on Monday.
While speaking on the topic, Soumyadeep Datta, regional convenor, Northeast region (Meghalaya & Assam) core group of Tibetan Cause, said the Brahmaputra valley civilization and Tibetan civilization have similarities.
He said both are interlinked with each other.
“Most of the indigenous people of Assam come from Tibet. If India is our motherland then Tibet is our fatherland. We came from the same civilization which was flourished for ages,” Datta said.
“Tibet was an Independent country but China illegally occupied Tibet in 1959. After occupying Tibet, the Chinese communist government started atrocities on the Tibetan people. Many Buddhist monasteries were destroyed several monks have been killed by the Chinese government in the recent past,” Datta added.
Datta further said, “There is a misconception among the people regarding the India-China border but in reality there is no border between India and China. India shares its border with Tibet, which is a buffer state between India and China.”
“China illegally occupied Tibet and now it is building dams to create pressure on India. China is a threat for India and it is their war strategy to build dams and create pressure on the downstream areas of Assam,” said Datta.
“The movement of free Tibet has been going on after the illegal occupation of Chinese authority. The Chinese government had killed many Tibetan for seeking Independence from Chinese occupation.”

“Many Tibetan protesters self-immolate them in protecting against the Chinese government,” Datta added.
He said, “Free Tibet – A Voice from Assam has been creating awareness on the Tibet issue among the masses.”
“I urged the students to study on Tibet. The students have a big role to play creating awareness on the movement of free Tibet,” he added.
Besides Datta, Avik Chakraborty, Dibrugarh district coordinator of Free Tibet – A Voice from Assam, Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia, Principal, DHS Kanoi College; Dr Moromi Talukdar, Head of the Dept, of Anthropology; Dr Anup Jyoti Bharali, Dr Nitumani Saikia, Dr Bhaskar Das and Dr Sunanda Sahu, all from Dept of Anthropology were present.
Dr Jyoti Phukan and Dr Aditya Dahal, both from the Dept of Physics; Dr Mitali Chaliha, Dept of Geography, Pooja Chagkakoti, Dept of Sociology, Dr Pallabi Gogoi, Liberian and Mriganka Saikia, traffic inspector, Dibrugarh were also present at the programme.
